San Diego Weather: Marine layer hangs on as winds and drizzle spread through Thursday

The marine layer will hang on for another day Wednesday, keeping most coastal and valley areas under clouds while gusty winds batter the mountains and deserts. Patchy mist or drizzle is possible overnight and in the morning through Thursday morning, and limited clearing is not expected until late in the afternoon.

Wednesday’s highs are forecast to reach 65 to 69 degrees at the coast, 65 to 68 degrees inland, 52 to 63 degrees in the mountains and 82 to 85 degrees in the deserts. A remains in effect for the mountains and deserts until 5 a.m. Thursday, with westerly winds of 20 to 35 mph and gusts of 45 to 65 mph. Any drizzle that does fall is expected to be light, with accumulations between a few hundredths and 0.10 inches through Thursday.

The weather pattern behind the gray skies is a storm to the north that has separated from the jet stream and is lingering over Central and Southern California through Friday. That setup is keeping clouds in place and sending more moisture and wind across the region, especially into the higher terrain and desert areas.

Thursday is shaping up as a transition day, with slightly better clearing, but the bigger change arrives Friday into early next week, when faster clearing and warming temperatures become the trend. This weekend, temperatures are expected to climb back near 70 at the coast, into the 70s and a few 80s inland, the 70s in the mountains and the mid to upper-90s in the deserts.

The warm-up should continue next week as high pressure builds, bringing more 70s at the coast, 80s inland, near 80 in the mountains and 100s in the deserts. For now, Wednesday remains the day when San Diego weather feels the most locked in: low clouds near the water, drizzle in spots and a wind advisory still doing the heavy lifting in the mountains and deserts.
