Trump honors Welles Crowther with Medal of Freedom 25 years after 9/11

President Trump on Friday honored , the Rockland County man who died on Sept. 11, 2001, while helping people escape the World Trade Center’s South Tower after it was hit by a hijacked airplane.

Trump announced that Crowther would receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom, then called his mother, , to the stage to accept the award on her son’s behalf. Crowther, who wore a red bandana over his face as he guided people to safety, is credited with saving an estimated 18 lives before he died in the attack.

The medal is America’s highest civilian honor, and Friday’s ceremony placed one of the most enduring 9/11 stories back in the spotlight. Crowther became known for moving through smoke and chaos inside the South Tower, helping strangers find an exit even as the building was under assault.

His red bandana now sits on display at the National September 11 Memorial & Museum, a small object that has come to symbolize the last minutes of a 24-year-old man who chose others over himself. The recognition came 25 years later, with Alison Crowther standing in for a son whose name has long been attached to courage.

She said her son’s heroism continues to be felt, a reminder that the people he saved did not just survive that morning; they carried the story forward. The award also gave formal national recognition to a sacrifice that has remained central to the memory of 9/11, even as the years have passed and the scale of the attacks has been recorded in history.

The central fact Friday was simple. A man who died while trying to save others was given the country’s highest civilian honor, and the mother who has carried his story for a quarter-century received it in his place.
