Shelton Benjamin says he still feels he has unfinished business in the ring and that he can still perform, even as he approaches the endgame of a long career. "The biggest reason is that I still feel like I have something to give," Benjamin said, and added plainly: "Physically, I can still do it. So, why would I quit?"
Benjamin, who marked his 26th year as a pro wrestler this run and says he has nearly 2,000 matches under his belt since 2000, framed his future as a personal decision rather than one handed down by promoters. He told listeners he has not had the same opportunities as some of his peers, but that he remains active, fit and both willing and able to compete; "It’s time, let’s start wrapping this up," he said he has told close friends, while also insisting, "First, backup, it ain’t going to be anytime soon."
The numbers Benjamin offered matter because they contradict the idea that longevity equals decline. A 50-year-old veteran who traces the start of his career to 2000, Benjamin said he fights to remain in the ring because of experience and conditioning: "I’m on my 26th year of being (a) pro wrestler and you know, even uncomfortable positions, there’s still times when my hands will go numb for no reason and things like that so, it’s really important these days for me, to one, stay in shape because at this point, it’s use it or lose it." He points to lifestyle changes and increased training as evidence: "That’s why you see all these workout videos, and as you guys know, I never worked out before so now these last few years, I really changed my lifestyle to incorporate more training."
Context sharpens the stakes. Benjamin was part of the original Hurt Business lineage that included MVP and Bobby Lashley, returned with them when The Hurt Syndicate reformed in October 2024 in AEW, and captured the AEW World Tag Team Championship with Lashley in January 2025. The faction briefly expanded and contracted—MJF joined in May 2025 and departed in August 2025—and the group is set to compete in Stadium Stampede at AEW Double or Nothing 2026 on Sunday, May 24, 2026.
But there is tension between what Benjamin says he wants and how the business has treated him. He told listeners he hasn't been afforded the same run as several of his contemporaries, even while remaining dependable and available: "I’ve made this promise to myself and all of my best friends including MVP, Bobby, Cedric, New Day." That promise, he said, is practical and blunt — he has given friends permission to call time when they see the signs. "I’ve given all my friends [permission to] give me the nod."
The human detail in those private guardrails is also a recruiting pitch. Benjamin was asked about adding a new member to The Hurt Syndicate and gave two specific names without hesitation. "Absolutely. No question. Straight up, yes. Absolutely. If it were my choice today, if I said I wanted a new member in the Hurt Syndicate — the Hurt Syndicate wants a fourth member, without a doubt, my first pick would be Cedric Alexander. My second pick would be Kevin ‘Jet’ Knight." Those selections echo Benjamin’s history with Cedric and the factional ties that have stretched across promotions and years.
Benjamin’s closing point is simple: he believes he still has more to give and he has built a system of friends to make sure the end comes on his terms. He can still do the work, he said, and he has told the people who matter, in advance, to pull the plug when it’s time — which, by his own admission, is not yet.
