Two people broke a window on a Camaro in Elk Grove Village early Wednesday morning and fled on foot after the homeowner banged on a window from inside the house. Police said the suspects did not get inside the car or steal it.
Police in northwest suburban Elk Grove Village responded at 4:52 a.m. to a disturbance in the 200 block of Wildwood Road after a caller reported that someone had broken into a car parked in the driveway. Surveillance video shared by the homeowner appears to show two people in hoodies walking toward the Camaro, breaking the window and running away after they were confronted.
The incident fits a worry that has been growing for the homeowner, who said he believes vehicle thefts and break-ins have increased in Elk Grove Village, especially involving Camaros. He pointed to recent thefts from a dealership showroom at 175 North Arlington Heights Road and said one of his neighbors had a vehicle repeatedly targeted before it was eventually stolen from the driveway.
The homeowner said police were able to recover fingerprints as evidence in his case, and investigators are now looking at whether the early-morning break-in is part of a broader rise in burglary activity in the village. That question matters because the Camaro was left in place this time, but the break-in adds another sign that the same type of target can draw repeated attempts.
