Sporting Kansas City will host Red Bull New York at Sporting Park on Saturday, May 23, at 7:30 PM CT, the final Major League Soccer match for both clubs before the 2026 FIFA World Cup pause.
Julian Hall has become the player to watch — he now leads New York with 11 goal contributions, nine goals and two assists this season and has been central to the Red Bulls’ recent form.
The numbers underline why this matters. New York arrives at 5-5-4 with 19 points, sitting on a three-match unbeaten run (2-0-1) and ranking second in MLS with 79 shots on goal, an average of 5.6 on target per match; the club has created 17 clear-cut scoring chances, tied for the fourth-most in the league. Sporting KC come in at 3-8-2 with 11 points, winners of back-to-back games but still last in the Western Conference with the worst goal differential in MLS at minus-21. Dejan Joveljic leads Sporting KC with six goals and is the only Sporting player with more than one goal.
Saturday’s meeting is the 60th all-time regular season matchup between the clubs; the series is deadlocked at 22-22-15. The Red Bulls have not played in Kansas City since 2022 and the teams last met in 2024, when a 16-year-old Julian Hall scored against Sporting KC — the same player who now carries New York’s attack.
Raphael Wicky reflected on New York’s recent run: "It does feel good to have had good results but also good performances." He added, "I think it was a really good two games and I’m happy for everyone." Looking ahead to Saturday he said, "What I want to see (on Saturday) is the same attitude, the same mentality, the same mindset and obviously a good performance."
Michael Bradley framed the match as a front-loaded task before a long break: "It’s a unique situation this summer with the World Cup and an extended break," he said. "We spoke to the group and really emphasized that we need to finish the first part of the season in the strongest possible way on Saturday night in Kansas City." Bradley also noted the reward waiting afterward: "And then the players are going to get some well-earned and much-deserved time off to recharge and reset, mentally and physically."
There will be extras for fans at Sporting Park. The club has scheduled Star Wars Night and is giving away Grogu bobbleheads at the gate. Supporter Stand ticket holders and Season Ticket Members are encouraged to gather in the Budweiser Brew House for prematch specials. Fans should also expect pyrotechnics and strobe lighting effects inside the stadium.
Logistics present friction. Construction of the new Buc-ee’s near Sporting Park has forced the closure of all four ramps of the N. 110th Street exit off I-70, and a portion of Village West Parkway near that exit is also closed — travel planners should account for delays heading to the game. Inside the building, Sporting KC has moved to mobile-only ticketing through SeatGeek Account Manager and no cash is accepted for transactions.
Tension on the field and off it is clear: Sporting KC have shown resilience with consecutive wins but remain a porous side on the table and in goal differential; New York are productive in attack and have not lost when scoring first this season. Those contrasts — an efficient, chance-creating Red Bulls side led by Hall and a struggling Sporting team suddenly finding form — frame the match as more than a local meeting between familiar rivals.
Major League Soccer pauses after Saturday’s contest for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Red Bulls are scheduled to return to league action on July 22 against the Philadelphia Union at Subaru Park, leaving this night in Kansas City as the last chance for both teams to finish the first half of the season on momentum. Given New York’s attacking metrics and Hall’s output, the Red Bulls look stronger on paper; Sporting KC’s recent wins complicate that picture, but the facts point to New York carrying the advantage into the break.
